History of Lucy Scribner Skidmore
Lucy was born July 4th, 1853. Her mother died shortly after her birth. Lucy was baptized at her mother’s funeral. She was then raised by her aunt, father and stepmother in Manhattan.
At the age of twenty one Lucy married John Blair Scribner. The two settled in New York and started a family.
Many tragedies awaited this youthful bride. She lost two children in infancy followed by her husband in 1879 who dies suddenly of pneumonia. She moved back with her father who passed away in 1882.
After these tragedies, Lucy spent many years studying piano, traveling and doing charitable work.
In 1897 she moved to Saratoga Springs and took up residency on North Broadway. It was during this time that she established the Young Woman’s Industrial Club who’s purpose was to “help little girls and young women to become self supporting and to provide a social center for them”.
By 1911 the YWIC had evolved into the Skidmore School of Arts for Women. By 1972 men were also enrolled into the program. Today the school, located on North Broadway, is known as Skidmore College.
Lucy Skidmore died in the year 1931.
